Abstract:

A process for tinting of articles molded from a polycarbonate is disclosed. The process entails immersing the molded article in a dye bath that contains water, dye, a carrier and an optional surfactant. The carrier is selected from polyoxyethylene (2) isooctylphenyl ether [4-(C 8 H 17 )C 6 H 4 (OCH 2 CH 2 ) n OH, n=2], nonylphenol polyethylene glycol ether [C 9 H 19 C 6 H 4 (OCH 2 CH 2 ) n OH, n=9], polyoxyethylene (40) isooctylphenyl ether [4-(C 8 H 17 )C 6 H 4 (OCH 2 CH 2 ) n OH, n=40] or polyoxyethylene (4) lauryl ether [C 12 H 25 (OCH 2 CH 2 ) n OH, n=4]. The method is especially useful in the manufacture of tinted lenses.
