Abstract:
To provide a varnish for forming a photo-alignment film that can prevent or suppress a DC afterimage and flickers in low-frequency driving in a liquid crystal display device.SOLUTION: A varnish for a photo-alignment film comprises a first polyamide acid-based compound and a second polyamide acid-based compound having higher polarity than that of the first polyamide acid-based compound in an organic solvent. The second polyamide acid-based compound is present in a larger amount than the first polyamide acid-based compound. The first polyamide acid-based compound contains: a skeleton derived from a tetracarboxylic acid compound having a cyclobutane skeleton, by 50 mol% or more; and a skeleton derived from a diamine compound having a primary amino group, a secondary amino group or a nitro group, by 10 mol% or less. The second polyamide acid-based compound contains: a skeleton derived from a tetracarboxylic acid compound having a cyclobutane skeleton, by 20 mol% or less; a skeleton derived from a pyromellitic acid dianhydride, by 10 mol% or less; and a skeleton derived from a diamine compound having a primary amino group, a secondary amino group or a nitro group, by 10 mol% or less.SELECTED DRAWING: None
