Abstract:
To efficiently form an alignment control layer in a horizontally aligned liquid crystal display element which requires neither a conventional alignment film formed of a polyimide or the like nor a process of forming the alignment film, and to provide a horizontally aligned liquid crystal display element excellent in transmittance characteristics and a contrast ratio.SOLUTION: A liquid crystal composition described below is used. The liquid crystal composition comprises a monomer for forming an alignment control layer, which has an α-alkoxyalkyl acrylate as a polymerizable group and induces at least one of photo-Fries rearrangement, photo-dimerization, photo-isomerization and photolysis by irradiation with UV rays, and the composition has positive or negative dielectric anisotropy.SELECTED DRAWING: None
