Abstract:
To provide an image forming apparatus that makes a charging current or a charging voltage appropriate according to the surface nature of a charging member to be used.SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus including a charging member 311 brought into pressure contact with a surface of a photoreceptor 300 comprises: surface detection means 326 that detects the surface nature of the charging member 311; and width changing means 322, 324, 325 that change a contact width between the surface of the photoreceptor 300 and the charging member 311 in the direction of movement of the surface. The image forming apparatus is further provided with width control means that controls the width changing means according to a result of detection performed by the surface detection means 326.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3
