Abstract:
To provide an intravenous (IV) catheter device accommodating the problem and necessity that have not been fully resolved by a currently available vascular access system and method.SOLUTION: An extravascular system is provided which includes a catheter adapter. The extravascular system 10 has the catheter adapter 13 having a blood control septum 18 for controlling flow of a fluid through the catheter adapter 13, the catheter adapter 13 having a catheter 15 configured for intravenous insertion. The extravascular system 10 further includes a septum activator 50 slidably inserted within the catheter adapter 13 and advancing through the blood control septum to provide a fluid pathway through the blood control septum. The extravascular system 10 includes an external safety mechanism comprising a needle hub 21 and a needle shield 30 interconnected via a tether 25, wherein the needle shield includes a safety clip 32 that retains a sharpened end of an introducer needle 40 within the needle shield.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
