Abstract:
To provide an improved mechanical radial seal, where the overall performance of the seal is enhanced by directing, in operation, a pressurized fluid to an interface between a rotor and a stator so as to impart lift onto the stator.SOLUTION: The seal includes a rotor 30. In operation, the rotor pressurizes air and directs the pressurized air to an interface between the rotor and a stator sealing element 20 so as to impart lift onto the stator sealing element. The fluid pressure generated by the rotation of the rotor biases the stator sealing element away from the rotor, thereby improving the overall performance of the seal.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
