Abstract:
PURPOSE:To make it possible to maintain a stable three-phase inter face at the electrode, by operating with converting the density of the electrolyte in an electrolyte layer at a lower temperature when the cell operation is stopped and at the high temperature when the cell is operating. CONSTITUTION:At a lower temperature when the operation of a fuel cell is stopped, the temperature is lowered while lowering the density of a phosphoric acid electrolyte, for example, to a specific density. At a higher temperature when the operation is carried out, the temperature is raised while raising the density of the phosphoric acid electrolyte to a specific density. In this case, the regulation of the density of the phosphoric acid electrolyte is made by a liquid fed to the phosphoric acid electrolyte. Therefore, the volume variation of the phosphoric acid electrolyte owing to the temperature variation with the operation and the pause of the fuel cell can be prevented, and a stable three-phase interface can be maintained at the electrode constantly.
