Abstract:
2,4-Butanediol and/or tetrahydrofuran is prepared by catalytic hydrogenation of maleic anhydride, succinic anhydride, maleic acid, succinic acid, fumaric acid or the alkyl esters of these acids at temperatures of 100 to 350 DEG C and at pressures of 50 to 350 bar over a catalyst which contains, as the catalytically active metal, cobalt and at least one of the elements copper and phosphorus, the hydrogenation being carried out, if desired, in the presence of an aliphatic alcohol.
