Title:
【発明の名称】強誘電性液晶を使用する電気光学スイッチング装置
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP2868774
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:
An electro-optic switching device using ferroelectric liquid crystals (40) to either transmit or reflect the incident light depending upon the molecular orientation of the ferroelectric liquid crystal molecules (40). An applied voltage across conductive coatings (44,45) causes the ferroelectric molecules (40) to switch from a first state in which the incident light is substantially transmitted to a state in which the incident light is substantially reflected. This is accomplished by effectively changing the refractive index of the ferroelectric liquid crystal (40) in the different states. The ferroelectric liquid crystal (40) is disposed between two dielectric mediums (42 and 43) such as glass so as to define a boundary which either causes incident light to change direction or its complex amplitude to change, and the smectic layers (41) of the ferroelectric liquid crystals (40) are oriented such that the incident light is selectively switched to one or more outputs (13 and/or 14). The molecules are also oriented so as to rotate in a plane perpendicular to the applied field, thereby reducing the switching time between the first and second molecular orientations. In addition, the switching effect may be made operative solely by the presence or absence of light by generating the applied electric field from the incident light.
