Abstract:
PURPOSE:To extend the gain control range by cascading two or more rare earth element-added optical fibers and setting one optical fiber to the low exciting state to operate it for gain control for the purpose of sufficiently exciting the other to obtain a high gain. CONSTITUTION:Signal light is synthesized with exciting light from an exciting light source 31 of an InGaAsP/InP semiconductor laser by an optical fiber coupler 21 and is made incident on an Er-added optical fiber 11. The signal light amplified in the fiber 11 is synthesized with exciting light from an exciting light source 32 by an optical fiber coupler 22 and is inputted to an Er-added optical fiber 12 and is branched from the exciting light by an optical fiber coupler 23 and is outputted. About 10% of the output signal light is branched by a single mode optical fiber coupler 5 and is received by a photodiode 6. A control circuit 7 increases or reduces the current of a driving power source 42 in accordance with the output of the diode 6 to control the exciting light power from a semiconductor laser 32. By this constitution, an Er-added optical fiber amplifier having a wide gain control range is realized.
