Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably and inexpensively obtain a material free from pulverization and excellent in various characteristics by coating the surface of primary hydrogen storage alloy grains easy to be activated with secondary hydrogen storage alloy grains stable to a prescribed atmosphere and having grain size smaller than that of the above grains. SOLUTION: The surface of primary hydrogen storage alloy grains easy to be activated as the one for a battery electrode is coated with secondary hydrogen storage alloy grains stable to a prescribed atmosphere in accordance with the use, for example, excellent in oxidation resistance, alkali resistance or the like and having grain size smaller than that of the primary hydrogen storage alloy grains. This coating is executed preferably by a mechanical frictional method, gas collision method, a plasma fusing method or the like in such a manner that 100 pts.wt. primary hydrogen storage alloy grains preferably having about <=100 μm grain size are mixed with about 25 pts.wt. secondary hydrogen storage alloy grains having grain size to about 0.1 to 20% of the grain size thereof. In this way, the boundaries of the grains are partially alloyed, and perfect electric bonding and sufficient mechanical strength among the grains can be attained.
