Abstract:
PURPOSE:To rapidly and surely detect a travel lane with a road image obtained from a video camera. CONSTITUTION:The road image taken in by a video camera 1 is divided into right and left ones, and for each white line of right and left, edge extraction, threshold value setting, white line extraction and straight line approximation processes are independently performed in parallel, and based on the results of straight line approximation for right and left, a travel lane detection means 10 detects a travel lane. Based on travel lane detecting result with a previous image and the scan line position used when setting threshold value in threshold value setting process, the area in which a white line exists is estimated, and further a processed area is limited, so that the time required for white line extraction process is reduced, for faster detection of travel lane. In addition, by deciding the amount of thinned scan lines used for white line extraction process according to the size of limited process area, the scan lines to be processed are concentrated around the area in which the white line exists, so that even the white line is a broken one, a contour is surely extracted for stable and rapid detection of a travel lane.
