Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To safety obtain the subject compound useful as a synthetic raw material for medicines and a liquid crystal material, etc., in high yield and optical purity by ready operation without requiring hydrogen by subjecting a carbonyl compound to hydrogen transfer type asymmetric reduction in the presence of a specific asymmetric reduction catalyst and a hydrogen donating compound. SOLUTION: (C) A carbonyl compound such as a compound of formula I [R<1> is a (substituted) aromatic monocyclic group, a polycyclic hydrocarbon group, etc.; R<2> is H, a (substituted) (un)saturated chain or cyclic hydrocarbon group, etc.] is subjected to hydrogen transfer type asymmetric reduction in the presence of (A) a three-component asymmetric reduction catalyst composed of a transition metal complex (e.g. a complex of a VIII group metal), a base [e.g. an alkali (alkaline earth) metal hydroxide or its (quaternary ammonium) salt] and an optically active nitrogen-containing compound (e.g. optically active amine derivative) and (B) a hydrogen-donating organic or inorganic compound [e.g. an alcohol, formic acid (salt), a hydrocarbon compound, a heterocyclic compound, hydroquinone or phosphorous acid] to provide the objective optically active alcohols such as a compound of formula II.
