Abstract:
PURPOSE:To provide a multicore optical fiber containing rare earth elements which is capable of amplifying the incident signal light on the inside of the cores even if electric power of the signal light large and realizing a multidistribution transmission system and enables efficient use of exciting light. CONSTITUTION:This multicore optical fiber 1 containing rare earth elements is formed by embedding the plural cores 3 in the single clad 2 and composing the plural cores 3 of glass contg. the rare earth elements. The process for production thereof comprises bundling and inserting plural core rods into a quartz glass tube, heating these core rods and subjecting the quartz glass tube to compression fusing to embed the core rods to produce a preform, then heating this preform and stretching and drawing the preform. The optical amplifier is formed by connecting an optical multiplexer to the incident side of the multicore optical fiber 1 containing rare earth elements and connecting an optical distribution type coupler to the output side.
