Abstract:
PURPOSE: To provide a hardenable aqueous emulsion having excellent storage stability and giving a coating film having high physical properties and provide a process for the production of the emulsion. CONSTITUTION: This hardenable emulsion contains (A) a hardenable polymer produced by the copolymerization of (a) a radically polymerizable monomer having alkoxysilyl group, (b) a radically polymerizable monomer copolymerizable with the above monomer (a) and (c) a radically polymerizable surfactant expressed by the general formula Z-(AO)n -Y (Z is a unit having radically polymerizable double bond; AO is an oxyalkylene group; (n) is an integer of >=2; Y is an ionizable group) and (B) a pH buffering agent. The emulsion is produced by the process (I) to emulsify and disperse the above monomers (a) and (b) together with an oil-soluble radical polymerization initiator in an aqueous medium in the presence of the surfactant (c) and the pH buffering agent and the process (II) to drop the obtained aqueous emulsified dispersion into a hot aqueous medium to effect the copolymerization of the monomers.
