PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a DC arc melting furnace having high heat transfer efficiency from arc heat and gas generated in the furnace to scrap by suppressing a decrease in mean input power without raising a movable electrode at the time of instantaneously generating a side arc. SOLUTION: A shape of a furnace body is set with L/D=0.5 to 1.4, where L is a height to an upper end of an inside wall of a furnace and D is an inner diameter of the furnace. When a power input controller receives a voltage drop signal of the case that a voltage drops from a predetermined value and a current application signal of the case that current is a predetermined value or more, rise or fall of a movable electrode 1 is first stopped. After the drop signal and the flow signal are continued for a predetermined time or more, the electrode 1 is quickly raised to eliminate a short-circuit. Thus a cost is reduced and productivity is improved by improvements in thermal efficiency and mean input power at the time of melting scrap.
