To provide an image display apparatus in which occlusion processing is performed without placing a load on a processor.

The apparatus is equipped with: temporary storage sections 12a, 12b, 12c and 12d in which position information of two diagonal points A(XA, YA) and B(XB, YB) for determining an occlusion range OA is loaded; comparators 13a, 13b, 13c and 13d which serially output a corresponding compared signals obtained by comparing whether the drawing point of the recessive display symbol RS belongs to the display range OA of a dominant display symbol DS or not, by inputting values loaded on the temporary storage sections 12a, 12b, 12c and 12d as reference values and by serially inputting values X and Y of position information of each drawing point of recessive display symbol RS whose priority is low, as comparison values; and an occlusion processor 1 which controls a luminance signal Z based on the comparator signals c outputted from the comparators 13a, 13b, 13c and 13d.
