Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively remove carbon monoxide and to enable the high efficiency operation of a high molecular electrolyte type fuel cell by using ruthenium metal containing substantially no halogen as a catalyst for removing carbon monoxide contained in a gaseous hydrogen produced by a reforming reaction of an organic compound. SOLUTION: At the time of adding a gas containing gaseous oxygen into the gaseous hydrogen produced by the reforming reaction of the organic compound and containing carbon monoxide to make a gaseous mixture and allowing the gaseous mixture to contact with the oxidation reaction catalyst of carbon monoxide, a catalyst consisting essentially of ruthenium metal containing substantially no halogen is used as the catalyst. The catalyst is preferably the one produced by using a halogen-containing ruthenium compound and removing halogen at the time of preparing the catalyst. For example, halogen is removed by treating with an alkali. The catalyst is preferably treated previously with the gas consisting essentially of hydrogen and after that, used for the oxidation reaction without being in contact with the air.
