The invention relates to a mechanism for folding an external rear view mirror, which moves the external rear view mirror from a folded to an unfolded position and vice versa, said mechanism comprising an electric motor, a mechanical transmission and control electronics. The folding mechanism is activated by connection to an electric power source and can be in blocked or unblocked position. The folding mechanism has a position detector that detects the blocked and unblocked positions. .
