To provide a fingerprint image collating device for executing fingerprint collation with high collating precision by storing and registering a proper fingerprint image without collection deviation or blur or crush or the like.
First data check processing is provided to generate edge extraction image data Ex, y by emphasizing the edge(ridge) of collected fingerprints from collected fingerprint image data Cx, y of a testee(person himself) and gradation direction extraction image data Gx, y indicating the contrast changing directions of respective pixels. Thus, it is possible to acquire the collected fingerprint image data Cx, y including not any collection deviation, blur, crash or core deviation but a sufficiently valid data area as registered fingerprint candidate image data ai based on that. Also, it is possible to select and register the accurate registered fingerprint candidate image data ai without deviation as registered fingerprint image data A in the fingerprint image of the testee(person himself). Therefore, it is possible to execute fingerprint authentication with the high collating precision of the person himself (with the low rejection rate of the person himself) by the fingerprint collation processing.
