To provide an optical recording medium obtaining a reproducing signal having satisfactory signal characteristics while preventing manufacturing cost from being increased and enhancing a shelf reliability for a long period of time.
The optical recording medium is provided with a substrate 11, a first waterproof layer 12, a first transparent intermediate layer 13, a recording layer 14, a second transparent intermediate layer 15, a second waterproof layer 16 and a light transmission layer 17. The recording layer 14 contains: at least one simple of a metal element selected from the group consisting of Ni, Cu, Si, Ti, Ge, Zr, Nb, Mo, In, Sn, W, Pb, Bi, Zn and La; and an element S or O bonded to a simple of metal elements contained in the recording layer 14 by irradiation with a laser beam L for recording to form a crystal of a compound with the metal element.
