To prevent excessive feed of HC to a three-way catalyst when a state in which HC is desorbed from an HC adsorption catalyst immediately after the cold start overlaps the recovery state from the fuel cut.
An exhaust emission control device of a vehicular engine with an HC adsorption catalyst (9) having a three-way catalyst on an exhaust passage comprises an air-fuel ratio enrichment means (11 and 21) to feed unburnt HC to the three-way catalyst through the air-fuel ratio enrichment if the state in which the fuel feed is re-started does not overlap the state in which the adsorbed HC is desorbed by the adsorption catalyst, and an air-fuel ratio enrichment prohibition means (11 and 21) to prohibit the air-fuel ratio enrichment if the state in which the fuel feed is re-started overlaps the state in which the adsorbed HC is desorbed by the HC adsorption catalyst.
