To achieve compressed self-ignition combustion with reduced fuel consumption, noises, NOx in exhaust gas and smoke and suppressed knocking trouble.
In this internal combustion engine, fuel is supplied to a combustion chamber having a cavity in a piston and the fuel in the combustion chamber is compressed for self-ignition. The fuel consists of low cetane value fuel having impossible compressed self-ignition by itself and high cetane value fuel having possible compressed self-ignition by itself. A combustion control method uses combustion technique in a low load operation region for starting the combustion in the combustion chamber at its outer periphery portion before ending a compression stroke, wherein the low cetane value fuel is distributed throughout the combustion chamber and the high cetane value fuel is arranged on the outer periphery portion of the combustion chamber. It uses combustion technique in a high load operation region for starting the combustion in the combustion chamber at its cavity after ending the compression stroke, wherein the low cetane value fuel is distributed throughout the combustion chamber and the high cetane value fuel is arranged in the cavity.
