In this method of storing and reading a document and a drawing by a microfilm and an electronic medium, an image identification symbol is put on the microfilm. An image recorded on the microfilm is recorded as an image file in an electronic medium, and index data on the image is recorded as a text file. The image file recorded in the electronic medium is recorded as raster data by film identification symbols using the image identification symbol as a file name. In the case of retrieving and displaying information recorded in the electronic medium, an index table prepared by a conversion module is used to make a stepwise hierarchical display of title information based on hierarchical information. When the hierarchically displayed title information is indicated, information on the image file provided with the tile information is displayed.
