To detect a combustion state and to keep consistent combustion of a combustion device used in a hydrogen generator.
This combustion device comprises a plurality of temperature detecting means 26 for detecting a temperature of each part of a combustion part 18 where city gas, LPG, an off gas (unreacted hydrogen gas) discharged from a fuel cell, or a gas prepared by mixing the city gas or LPG and the off gas is burned, and a control part 22 for determining the combustion state of the combustion part 18 and controlling a blower means 21 on the basis of the data of the temperature detecting means 26. As the hydrogen generator 1 is heated by the combustion of only the off gas discharged from the fuel cell without adding excess fuel and without affected by components of fuel such as the concentration of carbon hydride in detecting the flame 12, the reforming efficiency of the hydrogen generator 1 can be improved. Further as the proper amount of air 11 can be supplied to the flame 12, the combustion device 5 having a good condition of an exhaust gas can be provided.
