Abstract:
To treat neurodegenerative diseases such as cerebral accident, cerebrovascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease, it is intended to provide a differentiation and/or maturation agent characterized by containing as the active ingredient a low-molecular weight substance such as an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, which is capable of differentiating non-nerve cells such as bone marrow cells into nerve cells without treating with a cell division inducer and/or maturing nerve cells without treating with a cell division inducer and having a toxicity within a pharmaceutically acceptable range; a remedy or a malignization inhibitor for neurodegenerative diseases characterized by having the above-described effect(s); a method of differentiating non-nerve cells into nerve cells and/or maturing nerve cells; nerve cells obtained by this method; and a method of searching for the active ingredient.
