Abstract:

A friction stir joining method for joining two plate-shaped joining members (1,2) butted against each other with a level difference formed at upper surface sides thereof by a stir joining tool (10) having a probe (12) rotatable about a rotation axis (Q) thereof, the butted joining members (1,2) are arranged so as to be inclined to a horizontal plane (7a) with one of the joining members (1,2) having a higher upper surface level positioned at a lower side and the other at a higher side. Then, the rotating stir probe (12) is inserted into a butted portion (5) of the joining members (1,2) or the vicinity thereof in a state that the rotation axis (Q) is parallel to a vertical plane (T) extending along the butted portion (5). Then, the stir probe (12) is moved (4) relative to the joining members (1,2) along the butted portion (5) with the stir probe (12) inserted into the butted portion (5) or the vicinity thereof.
