To provide a dimmer capable of simply dimming an illumination load when dimming it, and also capable of securing a fixed dimming level regardless of an operator.

This dimmer A is equipped with an appliance body 11 and a dimming control means. An operating knob 10 is provided near the center of the appliance body 11 with the knob exposed toward the font side. A variable resistor is attached to the operating knob 10, the resistance value varies in accordance with the manipulated variable of the operating knob 10, and the dimming control means controls dimming of a halogen lamp in accordance with the resistance value. In this dimmer A, if the operating knob 10 is moved between the position B and the position C, the dimming control means monotonously vary the dimming level of the halogen lamp between the minimum dimming level and the maximum dimming level. If the operating knob 10 is moved between the position C and the position D, the dimming control means monotonously controls the dimming level of the halogen lamp between the maximum dimming level and a dimming level lower than the maximum dimming level.
