To provide a method for producing uranium dioxide powder where the amount of the waste liquid to be generated can be reduced compared with the case of a wet process, also, the amount of harmful hydrofluoride to be generated can be reduced, further, an intermediate product can be produced in a lower temperature region compared with the case of an IDR (Integrated Dry Route) process, further, a reaction apparatus can be easily composed, and uranium dioxide powder having excellent handling properties and high activity can be produced.
The invention is an improvement of a method for producing uranium dioxide powder from uranium hexafluoride by reconversion using a dry process, and comprises: a step where uranium hexafluoride is contacted with water vapor and ammonia gas, so as to cause vapor phase reaction, thus uranyl ammonium fluoride is produced; and a step where the produced uranyl ammonium fluoride is subjected to roasting/reducing treatment, so as to obtain uranium dioxide powder. The contact ratios among the uranium hexafluoride, water vapor and ammonia gas satisfy, by mol, 1:3 to 12:0.5 to 6, and the vapor phase reaction is performed in a heating atmosphere of 150 to 350°C.
