To provide an exhaust gas turbocharger capable of enhancing the comprehensive efficiency of an engine plant by steplessly controlling the rotational speed of a compressor without causing the surge of the turbocharger so that a supply air amount and a supply air pressure can be controlled to minimize an exhaust energy for securing the supply air amount required for an engine.
In this exhaust gas turbocharger, a transmission is interposed between the rotation shaft of a turbine and the rotation shaft of a compressor. The rotational speed of the turbine is changed by the transmission at a predetermined reduction gear ratio. The transmission is formed of a continuously variable transmission. The turbocharger comprises a control device which calculates a supply air amount deviation between the supply air amount required for the engine set according to engine load and engine speed and the actual supply amount, corrects, by using the deviation, the rotational speed of the compressor to calculate a target rotational speed, calculates the reduction gear ratio of the transmission by the target rotational speed and the actual rotational speed of the turbine, and controllably operates the transmission at the reduction gear ratio.
