Abstract:
A water-cooled nuclear reactor comprises an outer containment (10) enclosing a pressure vessel (18), which contains the core (20) and a receptacle (30) beneath the core to catch the core material in event of meltdown. At least two reservoirs of water (34,40) connected by gravity flow ducts and normally closed valves (38,44) to the inside of vessel (18) and to the space between vessel (18) and containment (10) then provide emergency cooling.
