Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a porous preform for an optical fiber by which the cracking of the porous preform can be prevented. SOLUTION: When the temperatures of faces of flames from a burner for forming a first layer and a burner for forming a second layer kept in contact with a region in which a porous preform 6 for an optical fiber grows are controlled, in the case where coordinates are given in the growing direction of the porous preform 6, a point corresponding to the interference part of the flames is represented by a point H, the front edge of the first layer of the porous preform 6 is represented by a point A and a point corresponding to 1/3 of the distance from the point A to the point H is represented by a point P, the growing state of the porous preform 6 is controlled in such a way that the relation of -60<=(T1-T2)<=20 is established between the maximum temperature T1( deg.C) of the P-A region between the points P and A and the maximum temperature T2( deg.C) of the P-H region between the points P and H.
