Abstract:
PURPOSE: An encoder is provided to perform position detection with high resolution by changing the output from one of two light receiving elements linearly or approximately to the relative movement of the scale member. CONSTITUTION: An encoder comprises a light source, a scale member, and a light receiving unit. The scale member is installed to relatively move in the traveling direction crossing the optical axis of the light source and includes a periodic light transmission part(11b) formed of slits pattern with the same opening and shielding width. The light receiving unit comprises two receiving elements having a receiving width less than the opening width in the position facing the light source, wherein the light receiving centers of the two light receiving elements are arranged to cross as much as half the opening width in the traveling direction and the light receiving areas of the two light receiving elements are arranged in parallel in the direction perpendicular to the traveling direction.
