To avoid an error of rewriting in a different format in the case where an imaging device is operating in a file format different from a recording medium initialized in an arbitrary file format.
An imaging apparatus comprises an initialization detecting means for detecting whether or not a recording medium has been initialized already when it is loaded; an initialization format detecting means for detecting the type of initialization format of the recording medium; and a format detecting means for detecting a difference between the detected initialization format and a file format of a video signal system being set to a main body. Even in the case where the file format of the video signal system being set to the main body is different from the initialization format of the recording medium as a result of detection due to the format detecting means, a video signal of a system that is not suited to the recording medium that is not suited to the initialization format of the recording medium is prevented from being written.
