A camera apparatus disclosed herein calculates a degree of complexity in an object on the basis of a plurality of pixel data obtained by the imaging element during the standby state of a photographing instruction, discriminates a point with high complexity among calculated degrees of complexity, sets the discriminated point to be a discrimination region of a contrast value in an automatic focal adjustment operation and carries out the automatic focus point adjustment operation based on the set discrimination region when a photographing instruction is made to carry out photographing recording.
