To provide a vehicle surroundings monitoring device for accurately recognize whether an object is a four-footed animal or not.
In the vehicle surroundings monitoring device, an object is determined to be a four-footed animal when a first element area group and a second element area group are extracted at different times from an area which is extracted as an object area from a captured image and in which the object is present. Considering that a first attitude showing that forelegs and hind legs are opened and a second attitude showing that one of forelegs and hind legs are opened are confirmed at different times when a walking four-footed animal is seen from the side, it is accurately recognized whether the object is a four-footed animal or not, in this method.
