To provide a multi-photon type organic EL element having high reliability and service life characteristic, to provide a method of manufacturing the same, to provide a lighting apparatus, to provide a planar light source, and to provide a display device.

This organic EL element 10 is constituted by laminating an anode 2, a first light emitting unit 3, an electric charge generating layer 4, a second light emitting unit 5 and a cathode 6 in this order on a substrate 1. The first light emitting unit 3 and the second light emitting unit 5 respectively include a light emitting layer. The electric charge generating layer 4 includes metal having a work function of 3.0 eV or less, one kind or more of its compound and metal-doped molybdenum oxide.
