To provide a projector which can quickly detect laser beam abnormalities without spoiling the use efficiency of light even when not using a screen or a lens cover.
The scattered light from each laser light source is received by the light sensors (light source side sensors 31) disposed close to each of the light sources composing the laser array 11. The light sensors (panel side sensors 32, 33, 34) are disposed around the liquid crystal panels 18, 21, 27 to receive the side lobe light generated by the fly eye integrator 13. The abnormalities of the laser beam are detected based on the abnormalities of the signals detected by the light source side sensors 31 and the panel side sensors 32, 33, 34. The abnormal section is specified depending on which of the detected signals contains abnormalities.
