To provide a water treatment method by which the ammonia concentration of various kinds of ammonia-containing waste water, for example, tap water and sewage, excreta, exuding water from a final waste disposal site and various kinds of industrial waste water can be effectively decreased.
The water treatment method comprises the steps of: decreasing BOD in raw water containing BOD and ammonia; converting ammonia contained in the BOD-decreased raw water into nitrous acid; and subjecting the resulting raw water to anaerobic ammonia oxidation treatment using Anammox bacteria. In the preceding stage of the step of subjecting the resulting raw water to anaerobic ammonia oxidation treatment, BOD of the required amount is left behind to make other nutritional denitrifying bacteria coexist with the Anammox bacteria, so that such a reaction that the nitrate ion produced by an anaerobic ammonia oxidation reaction is decreased by the action of other nutritional denitrifying bacteria is performed in parallel with the anaerobic ammonia oxidation reaction.
