To provide technology capable of certainly removing clogging of a capturing device while suppressing deterioration of fuel economy, in an EGR system provided with the capturing device for capturing foreign matter in an EGR gas on a midway of an EGR passage.
The EGR system for the internal combustion engine is provided with the EGR passage; the capturing device provided on the EGR passage and capturing the foreign matter contained in the EGR gas; an exhaust temperature obtaining means for obtaining a temperature of the exhaust gas flowing into the capturing device; a soot deposition amount obtaining means for obtaining a deposition amount of soot in the capturing device; a pressure loss obtaining means for obtaining pressure loss in the capturing device; a removal means for removing an exhaust component deposited in the capturing device by temperature-raising the capturing device when it is detected that the pressure loss obtained by the pressure loss obtaining means exceeds a predetermined reference value; and a setting means for setting a target temperature when the removal means temperature-raises the capturing device according to the temperature obtained by the exhaust temperature obtaining means and the deposition amount obtained by the soot deposition amount obtaining means.
