To provide a method and apparatus for water purification capable of easily and effectively decomposing an organic substance in water using simply structured installations without utilizing expensive oxygen gas.
The method for water purification is characterized in that air micro-bubbles are injected to water to be treated that contains organic substances, and then the water to be treated is brought into contact with a photocatalyst having titanium oxide on its surface while irradiating the water with ultraviolet rays. The photocatalyst is preferably a nonwoven fabric of a photocatalyst fiber having titanium oxide on its surface. The ultraviolet ray exposed to the photocatalyst preferably has its peak wavelengths at 180 to 190 nm and 250 to 260 nm.
