To display an image with excellent picture quality by any display device while efficiently performing image processing by a technique for making a plurality of kinds of display devices selectively display images.

External image data read out of an external medium and image data corresponding to a character image to be superimposed thereupon are expanded into an image of QVGA size corresponding to a display unit of a device main body (steps S104 and S105). When a television receiver as the external display device is not connected (step S106), images of them are put together and output to an LCD controller to be displayed on the display unit (step S107). When a television receiver is connected, the character image is expanded to a VGA size by rearranging characters through recalculation of coordinates while the external image data are expanded again to the VGA size and, and the expanded images are put together and sent out to a video encoder (step S108 to S110).
