Abstract:
Bone marrow access apparatus (10) includes a bone penetrating member (12) having an internal channel (30) having openings at proximal and distal ends, and a valve cap (14) engaged therewith. The valve cap (14) defines an interior cavity in which at least part of the bone penetrating member (12) is situated. The valve cap (14) includes a valve (52) having an opening having an open state in which the channel (30) is not obstructed and a closed state preventing flow of material through the channel (30). By being repeatedly switchable between the open and closed states, the valve (52) controls access to the channel (30) by bone marrow sampling and biopsy instruments. The bone marrow access system includes the bone marrow access apparatus (10) and an installation instrument including a flange and drill bit.
