PURPOSE: To obtain an ester derivative, capable of optimizing the Δn of a liquid crystal composition and reducing the viscosity and the threshold voltage value and having a high mutual solubility in various liquid crystal compounds.
CONSTITUTION: The objective ester derivative of formula I (V, W, X, Y and Z are H or halogen), e.g. (4-fluorophenyl)2-fluorobenzoate. This compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a carboxylic acid of formula II with a halogenating agent such as thionyl chloride or phosphorus pentachloride, providing an acid chloride of formula III, then reacting the resultant compound of formula III with a substituted phenol of formula IV in an inert organic solvent such as pyridine, subsequently washing the prepared reactional mixture with water, drying the washed reactional mixture and recrystallizing the objective compound from the dried reactional mixture. Ester-based, cyclohexylphenylic, biphenylic, pyrimidine-based, dioxane-based and tolan-based liquid crystal compounds are cited as a liquid crystal compound mixable with the compound of formula I.
