Date May 18, 1989.Novel esters of amino acids are proposed of which the alcoholic components are formed from threo-4-alkoxy-5-arylhydroxymethyl-2(5H)-furanones. These esters may be present in the form of racemates, pure diastereomers or enantiomers or in the form of diastereomer or enantiomer mixtures. The compounds are anticonvulsive and antiepileptic and due to their good water solubility are easier to administer and more readily absorbable than known anti-convulsives and antiepileptics. A novel process is also disclosed which leads stereoselectively to the diastereomers or the enantiomers or mixtures thereof. The invention further relates to the use of the novel amino acid esters as pharmaceutical preparations and in the production of pharmaceutical preparations.
