A decoding tree using magnetic cores transfers the set state of core 30 to the one of cores 32 and 34 corresponding to the first binary digit of an input signal and then to the one of cores 36, 38, 40 and 42 which corresponds to the two bit input signal. In the embodiment of Fig. 2, core 30 is first set by source 44. The first bit of a signal from source 112 then sets phase sensitive amplifier 106 or 110 depending on the binary digit and also causes timing circuit 114 to set odd to even transfer source 92. If the first bit is " 1 " amplifier 110 is set, sending a current through transfer control cores 58, 74 and 66. On the passage of the pulse from source 92 an output signal is produced in windings 52 and 56. The signal in winding 52 sets control core 54 and then has insufficient strength. to set core 32. Because of the signal in winding 108 core 58 is not set by the output signal in winding 56 and the set state of core 30 is transferred to core 34. The second digit of the output signal sets source 96 which transfers the state of core 34 to core 40 or 42 depending on which of amplifiers 106, 110 is set. Source 92 may then be used to transfer information to output circuits 78, 82, 86, 90. The cores are primed at each stage either by the clearing current flowing to ground through winding 100 or, in the case of core 32 after being set by source 44, by source 102 which also clears the transfer control cores 54, 58, 64, 66, 72 and 74. In the embodiments of Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), inhibit windings are used instead of the transfer control cores.
