Abstract:

A method of forcing back a number of electrical coils carried by a slotted magnetic core comprises the steps of disposing side portions of at least first and second coils in slots of the core; generating at least one surge of electrical energy in the second coil thereby establishing forces acting on the second coil to move it in the general direction of the first coil; and forcing back the first coil by movement of the second coil. A stator core 11 for a four-pole polyphase induction type electric motor has coil g groups 21-24 wound in slots 16 therein. Each group is composed of three coils 26-28, the groups having radial polar centres 29 disposed 180 electrical degrees apart. Standard end turn insulators 30 are placed beneath the coil end turns and a side turn portion insulator (35) is placed in the slots which accommodate coil groups 31-34, F g. 4 (not shown). These coil groups are then wound 60 electrical degrees from coil groups 21-24 and comprise coils 36-38, which are connected to an electrical energy surge source 40. The stator may be supported on an insulated non- magnetic cylinder 47 which projects entirely through the bore. The cylinder also serves to hold the coils in the slots and the end turns clear of the bore. A capacitor bank in the source 40 is discharged and the magnetic inter-action caused by the electrical surge in the coil groups 31-34 forces them radially outwardly in the slots 16, thereby compacting coil groups 21-24 and pushing back the end turns. Further eddy currents are generated in the cylinder 47 to intensify this action. Coil groups 51-54 are next wound on to the core and similarly compacted, thereby further compacting coil groups 21-24 and 31-34. The method of the invention is also applicable to armatures.
