Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS4839071
Kind Code:
B1
Abstract:
In a sewage handling system, sewage receivers are flushed with a solution containing caustic alkali in germicidal concentration which is passed through a comminutor and a settling tank from which it is recycled to the flushing inlets of the receivers, the concentration of the alkali being maintained by addition thereof as required, and the total quantity of liquid in the system being maintained approximately constant. The preferred alkali is caustic soda. Bleaching agents such as sodium hypochlorite may be used. In Fig. 1, sewage from the receivers 2 is flushed with caustic alkali under pressure from tank 34 and passes by pipe 6 and valve 20 to tank 22 in which the caustic alkali effects initial sterilization and disintegration of the sewage. It then passes through the comminutor 24 to tank 26 where additional caustic soda and hypochlorite are supplied from tanks 38 and 40. From tank 26, a proportion of the effluent is recirculated by pump 60 to tank 22. The resulting solution from tank 26 passes into settling tank 30 from which part of the solution is periodically drawn by pump 32 to replenish tank 34, the remainder being either drawn off to the storage tanks 74 or discharged directly through valve 66. The system is particularly applicable to ships in enclosed waters.
