Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS4843129
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
1350354 Sodium-sulphur cells VUASA BATTERY CO Ltd 7 Aug 1972 [6 Oct 1971] 36801/72 Heading H1B In a sodium-sulphur storage cell the solid electrolyte comprises #-alumina formed into container 1 for the sodium and the cathode 4 comprises sulphur or sodium polysulphide contained in a graphite sheet wrapped round container 4 and bound by longitudinal strips 6 of stainless steel and stainless steel wire 5, tube 8 for introducing sodium also serving as negative terminal. A reservoir 2 for sodium, formed from α-alumina is secured to container 4 by glass. Stainless steel container 10 is provided with bellows 14 to take up stress occurring when the molten sulphur solidifies, which might otherwise damage the solid electrolyte member 4. Container 10, the ends of strips 6 and cap 11 are welded together. In addition to exhaust pipe 9, the cell may have a second short negative terminal for use during discharge whereby separation between the terminal and sodium as the latter is depleted terminates the discharge automatically. A battery based on such cells is disclosed (Fig. 3, not shown).
