Japanese Patent JPS4848387
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
1384793 Iridium oxide SOLVAY ET CIE SA 24 May 1972 [2 June 1971 4 May 1972] 24452/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division C7] A method of manufacturing an electrode with an Ir or Ir oxide coating comprises applying to a substrate of Ti or Ti alloy (optionally carrying a thin surface layer of TiO 2 ), a coating composition comprising thermally decomposable compounds of Ir and of at least one of Li, B, Be, Mg, Ga and Ge in a liquid vehicle. The liquid vehicle may be amyl alcohol, butyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, propylene carbonate, dimethyl formamide, dimethyl sulphoxide, dilute HCl, or mixtures thereof. The Ir compound can be any compound that decomposes to the metal and/or oxide, e.g. hexachloroiridic acid. The substrate is cleaned and etched, after which the coating is applied by brushing, spraying, atomizing or immersion, dried and heated in an oxidizing atmosphere to produce Ir in the metallic or oxidized state. The coated substrate may be subsequently coated with a Pt metal or compound. The substrate may be coated and heated to form successive layers. The atomic proportion of Ir to other said element(s) lies between 1/4 and 8/1. Several examples of coating compositions are given.
